Frances Violante began her artistic career as a professional Interior Designer having earned a master’s degree in interior design with concentrated studies in art from the University of Connecticut.
She owned and operated a successful interior design business; won a national award for her innovative rug design, and completed advanced graduate studies in geriatric design from Harvard University, Boston, MA.
Having studied sculpting at the University of Hartford, CT, Frances honed her creative artistic talents through several intensive marble sculpture courses in Carrara and Pietrasanta, Italy.
Ms. Violante was one of 42 contemporary artists to be selected by The National Sculpture Society for the 90th Annual Awards Exhibit at Brookgreen Gardens in Pawleys Island, SC. The juried competition included over 350 entries from around the world. She was one of 9 artists, from a pool of 501 entries, to receive an award from the Slater Museum at Norwich Free Academy, (Norwich, CT). She also received awards from the Catharine Lorillard Wolf Art Club, New York City, The Society of Connecticut Sculptors and Lyme Art Association, (Old Lyme CT).
Her work is representational as well as abstract. She works in clay, stone, mosaics, and marble with castings in bronze.
Ms. Violante is president of the Society of Connecticut Sculptors.
I was inspired to create “Awakening” after completing a contemporary, gracefully twisted Obelisk in beautiful Carrara marble.
In sculpting “Awakening” I felt the marble unfurl and open to receive the world around itself.
“Awakening” was an opportunity to integrate shapes, form, movement, and textures to evoke an emotional reaction from the viewer. I tried to marry the physical aspect of the sculpture with the surrounding negative space.
My objective was to stir the creative imagination and to add a personal interpretation when viewing “Awakening.”
I invite the viewer’s eyes to travel around the piece, to feel the movement and determination.
